Amazon to Give Away Free Songs On Super Bowl
January 14, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Amazon is teaming up with majojr record labels to give away tons of DRM-free songs during the Super Bowl set for next month, as the promotion will have Amazon work with Pepsi-Cola, and no Apple to be found.
Apple worked with Pepsi-Cola four years ago during the Super Bowl to give away 100 million songs through the Apple iTunes store. Things are changing now though as Pepsi-Cola is now teaming up with Amazon to do a similar promotion all over again.
The stars of the promotion will be headed up by Justin Timberlake and others.
This is a clear sign that things may be changing in the digital music industry between Apple and Amazon as it was always Apple who would be doing these type of promotional deals. This time out though it is Amazon working with the major record labels and advertisers to expand their service.
All major record labels have now signed on with Amazon to offer their music catalog for sale on their service in the DRM-free MP3 format.
Sony BMG Music Entertainment was the last to join last week.
Many, such a EMI, still require that Apple use DRM software on their songs they sell.
It is clear that Amazon is making a run at Apple and the iTunes service, but will it succeed, or will the beast that is iTunes slap it away. Get ready for Super Bowl Sunday!
