Apple iTunes Deal With Studios Could Hurt DVD Sales
May 2, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Apple signed deals with many major movie studios which move us a step away from the traditional DVD media format, and closer to digital distribution of films. Apple has announced that the iTunes Store will start to receive new releases day and date with their DVD releases.
Apple announced on Thursday that these deals signed with many major studios will mean that the iTunes Store will get releases the same exact day they are released on DVD.
This means it will no longer be necessary to even bother going to your local retail store to pick up a DVD release if you do not feel like it.
The studios signed on with Apple include Walt Disney Studios, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Image Entertainment, First Look Studios, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Lionsgate.
The new release films are going to be priced at around the same price as a DVD, $14.99 with older prices still remaining at $9.99 for a film.
It should be interesting to see how this affects the sales of DVDs at retail, and if the iTunes Store can steal some of those sales away.
In the past it would take quite a bit of time following the DVD release for a movie to be available on the Apple iTunes Store.
