Mattel Recalls More Toys, Lots More
August 14, 2007

Boston (dBTechno) - Mattel has announced its second recall in the last two weeks, this time of more than 9 million “made in China” toys because of injury and health risks posed by lead paint and reports of choking and intestinal damage that can occur from children swallowing the small magnets on some of these toys.
“The magnets inside these dolls and accessories can fall out — undetected to parents and caregivers. These magnets can be swallowed or aspirated by young children or placed by a child in their nose or ears. When more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract to each other and cause intestinal perforation, infection or blockage, which can be fatal. Aspiration to the lungs requires immediate surgery. Magnets placed in the nose or ears can cause swelling and be difficult to remove,” reads the company’s website.
“The safety of children is our primary concern, and we are deeply apologetic to everyone affected,” said Robert A. Eckert, chairman and chief executive officer, Mattel. “Mattel has rigorous procedures, and we will continue to be vigilant and unforgiving in enforcing quality and safety. We don’t want to have recalls, but we don’t hesitate to take quick and effective action to correct issues as soon as we’ve identified them to ensure the safety of our products and the safety of children.” Read more
Toshiba Recalls Laptop Batteries
August 14, 2007
Washington (dbTechno) - Toshiba is recalling over 1,400 lithium-ion batteries which were sold in three of their notebook PCs, the Satellite A100, Satellite A105, and Tecra A7.
The recall is a part of a huge recall which was put out back on July 17th. This simply builds on that original recall. The original recall involved 5,100 Sony-manufactured laptop batteries for 17 other models including many from the Toshiba line such as Qosimo, Tecra, etc.
Toshiba stated that the batteries were recalled due to “certain incidents” where battery packs caught on fire when running in the notebook computers.
Sony stated that cells in the batteries which were manufactured in a specific location could have caused the problem.
The recall affected laptops made by Toshiba, Apple, Dell, Gateway, Lenovo, Sony, and Fujitsu. The recalled batteries should stop being used immediately.
Consumers affected by this can run the Toshiba BatteryCheck utility on the Toshiba web site.
