FBI Investigates Counterfeit Chinese Computer Parts
May 11, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - The FBI and Pentagon are concerned over the fact that many U.S. computer systems may be functioning on counterfeit computer parts.
The FBI carried out an investigation for a period of 2-years called Operation Cisco Raider.
They were acting on a total of 36 search warrants, and found that 3,500 Cisco products were counterfeit. The total value of these Cisco network products was believed to be around $3.5 million.
In total, 15 criminal cases were brought up which focused on counterfeit computer parts purchased by U.S. military agencies, electric companies, and other companies.
The FBI has stated that there is a major concern here due to the possibility of remote hacking of secure computer networks.
Some of the components included pirated versions of Cisco Systems Inc routers, switches, wide area network interface cards, and more.
