OLPC Joins With Microsoft, Adds Windows To XO Laptop
May 16, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - Microsoft has struck a deal with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) to bring the Windows operating system to the XO laptop, also known as the $100 laptop.
The hope is that now with Microsoft joining up with the OLPC, the XO laptop will finally be able to take off to the level once hoped.
The version of the XO laptop with Windows is set to go on sale this September. The expected price point will be very similar to the Linux-based model, around $200.
OLPC Chairman Nicholas Negroponte has stated that this is a huge deal for the company, as it will allow the XO laptop to be accepted more in developing countries.
The OLPC group has been trying to get developing companies to buy these laptops for years now, but has failed to really make any strides, selling 600,000 in total. Things are looking much brighter for OLPC now though with this Microsoft deal.
