LaCie Stark Desktop Hard Drive
Hard Drive Review
Manufacturer: LaCie
Price: $130
LaCie, a company known for their high-profile designs when it comes to computer hardware, has teamed up with Phillippe Starck to come up with the Starck Desktop Hard Drive line.
This line features USB drives that range in size from 1TB up to 2TB, with prices starting at just $130 for the 1TB model, making them extremely affordable.
For that price point, don’t expect anything but great either, as this drive does some pretty cool stuff.
Starting with the design, the drive is enclosed in a nice-looking 3mm aluminum exterior with a cool status LED that will change colors depending on the activity taking place.
On top of that, there is also an extremely stylish touch-sensitive front panel. This touch-sensitive panel acts as buttons which you can program to open any application as you please.
This means that you can program the touch-sensitive button to recognize certain presses to launch certain applications.
How practical this is will depend on the user, as personally I do not see it as something you will use all that often.
The best practical use I found was to program it to open certain programs or folders that you would typically like to back data up for.
These can be easily programmed with the LaCie Desktop Manager software that comes included.
Backing up is also quite easy with the included software for either Windows or the Mac. Once you hook up the drive, you will immediately format it and then be able to backup away automatically right to the drive.
This is one fast USB 2.0 drive, faster than anything we have been able to test in the past year or so in the dbTechno.com office for sure. Transferring files to and from the USB drive was done in a flash and with great ease.
The specis come in at a capacity that ranges from 1TB to 2TB, a speed of 7,200 RPM, and a connection of USB 2.0.
When you factor in the price point of $130, you will see that there is immense value in this desktop hard drive for sure. Our only complaint in the design is that it is a bit too bulky to pull off that true stylish look.
The truth of the matter is that this is a high-quality desktop hard drive that looks cool, works great, and has enough features to make it well worth its affordable price tag. Definitely worth a look!
Final Score: 8.9 dbTechno Recommended!
