Israel (dbtechno) – A version of the Bible was successfully inscribed on an area smaller than the head of a pin last week. Researchers studying Ion and Particle beans announced their work at a press conference to promote nanoscience and various nanotechnologies.

Three hundred thousand words of Hebrew text were written on a silicon surface to show the ability of Ion Beans to be used for very small tasks. The writing was done with an instrument called a Focused Ion Beam.

The writing was performed on a very small silicon chip covered with micro thin layer of gold. “We direct a focused particle beam at a spot on the surface, and expose a layer beneath,” said Ohad Zohar, a scientist and project manager at Technion.

Technion is the company sponsoring and funding the research in nanotechnology.

“By aiming a focused beam at different areas of on the substrate, we are able to etch almost any pattern, especially text.” Said Mr. Zohar.

One of the next projects exploring Nanotechnology that Technion scientists and researchers plan to develop is to photograph the entire bible and display it on a giant wall. The size of the bible display will be huge, 23 feet by 23 feet. “Near the actual giant picture of the bible itself we will have the Nano-Bible, which is only the size of a grain of sugar, on display,” said Zohar.

The Bible has a lot of text based information written very densely packed together. By using a bible as a resource and starting place, companies doing research such as Technion can make nanotechnology more relevant and familiar to the public.

“Using the Bible, the nano-Bible team shows what we have for miniaturization available,” said Mr. Zohar. “There are a lot of limits in nanoscience and nanotechnology that have yet to be tapped,” remarked Zohar.
