Washington (dbTechno) – According to reports, IBM plans to shrink the PS3 Cell CPU as they will no longer be manufacturing the 65nm processors, instead they will shrink them to 45nm processors. This will likely reduce production costs which will lead to another PS3 price drop and possibly the PS3 Slim which has been rumored.
The Cell CPU is the chip which powers the next-gen Sony PS3.
The introduction of the 45nm CPU was pretty much expected and has been expected for months. It was more of a matter of when than if it would happen.
The great thing about this is that Sony will be able to start to reduce the production and manufacturing costs of the Sony PS3.
The 45nm Cell processor will use 40% less power than the current chip in place, and the size will also be reduced by 34%.
It is cheaper to produce and also reportedly more reliable than the current 65nm Cell chip.
This will allow Sony to begin to roll out some cheaper PS3 packages, and even the rumored Slim PS3.
