Artificial Sweeteners Linked As Cause Of Weight Gain

February 11, 2008

Scientists have come out and stated that food which contains artificial sweeteners can actually make you gain weight and get more fat, instead of helping you slim down and lose weight.Boston (dbTechno) - Scientists have come out and stated that food which contains artificial sweeteners can actually make you gain weight and get more fat, instead of helping you slim down and lose weight.

A study has revealed that artificial sweeteners do not help you lose weight and stay slim at all. It has revealed that it actually may help you gain weight and become more obese.

The research has been published in the February issue of Behavioral Neuroscience and looked at rats.

Rats were given yogurt with saccharin, the ingredient used in the artificial sweetener Sweet’N Low, while other rats were given sugar.

Over the two-week study, the rats who ate the artificial sweetener consumed 100 more calories and gained 5 grams more weight than the animals who ate sugar.

Authors Susan Swithers and Terry Davidson of Purdue University wrote “The gradual increases in body weight shown by our rats make them more similar to the current U.S. human population, which has exhibited about a 10 percent increase in body weight over the past 10 years.”

They stated that a rise in use of artificial sweeteners is directly linked to a rise in the obesity rate of Americans.

Artificial sweeteners have also been linked to higher blood sugar, low levels of good cholesterol, and abnormal fats.
