FDA Reviewing Chemicals Used For Tattoos

February 11, 2008

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that they are going to launch studies to review chemicals used by tattoo artists. These chemicals are injected into the skin of millions of Americans each yearBoston (dbTechno) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that they are going to launch studies to review chemicals used by tattoo artists. These chemicals are injected into the skin of millions of Americans each year.

The FDA, for the first time, has began to launch studies to look into these chemicals and figure out exactly what is in the chemicals. The U.S. has thousands of tattoo shops and is a $2.3 billion a year industry.

Reports of skin problems related to tattoo chemicals, such as rashes, swelling, and blistering sparked the FDA to begin these studies.

The FDA is trying to see how the body responds to the chemicals, and how they break down in the body.

The FDA stated they will add to knowledge that if done the wrong way, a tattoo can lead to HIV, and other diseases.

There has yet to be any type of government regulations placed on the tattoo industry, so if the FDA acts to try to protect consumers, things could certainly get shaken up a bit for tattoo artists.

FDA spokeswoman Stephanie Kwisnek stated that “concerns raised by the scientific community” have sparked the studies and review of chemicals used by tattoo artists.
