Baby Sent Home With Wrong Family From Illinois Hospital
April 12, 2008
Chicago (dbTechno) - Illinois state public health officials have stated that two babies were switched, accidentally, at a hospital in Illinois. One of the babies was sent home with the wrong family. Both parents have files lawsuits against the Heartland Regional Medical Center.
Back in March, two newborn babies were switched accidentally after they were circumcised.
One of the parents took the wrong baby boy home, while the mother of the other boy remained at the hospital. She had no idea where her babyw as for hours on end.
When the mother got home with the baby, she felt something was wrong. The hospital apparently told her she had the right baby though.
Just a couple of hours later, she got a phone call to bring the baby back. A DNA test proved that the babies were given to the wrong parents.
Both of the parents have filed lawsuits. The attorney representing both families, John Womick, stated that they are seeking money damages in excess of $50,000.
The families are also pushing the hospital to improve on their procedures so other parents do not go through this.
The only thing the babies had on them to help them be identified was identification bracelets. This may not be enough though.
The Heartland Regional Medical Center has put out a statement saying “We genuinely regret the circumstances surrounding the discharge of these infants. Fortunately, the situation was quickly identified and corrected within hours, with both healthy babies being joined with their families.
Unfortunately, because the families have elected to hire a lawyer, we are not able to discuss this in any more detail at this time.”

This is not as uncommon as you would think. When I had a baby in a Houston Hospital, 30 years ago, same type of ID used today, my roommate was given the wrong baby. Both had the last name of Brown. I looked over at her nursing him and said, that is not your baby. Her baby had a huge head, this was a little guy. She called and the nurse confirmed she had nursed the wrong baby. Hospitals need more accountability. I know there is a better way then the plastic bands that fall off. Non permenant ink? tatoo that only lasts a week. I am sure there are lots of better ways. You can’t tell me after 30 years that they can’t do better with todays technoligy.
this kind of stuff is happening more and more frequently. it wold really scare me to have a child now, i would insist on delivery in room and keeping baby in room till discharge secondary to delivery at home with a midwife.
