Drinking, Alcohol Dependence Among U.S. Women Increases
May 5, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to a new study, there has been a big increase in drinking and alcohol dependence among U.S. women. This increase has been seen in women born after 1945, World War II.
For the study, researchers looked at two widespread national surveys. With this data, they compared how prevalent rates were for drinking and alcohol dependence from the same age groups and demographics.
The researchers used cross-sectional surveys so that they were able to compare those aged 30 to 40 in 2001, compared to those ages 30 to 40 in 1991.
They found that women born after World War II are far more dependent on alcohol and are more likely to drink.
This increase was not seen in men, as the gender gap is clearly closing between men and women when it comes to alcoholism being a man’s disease.
Women now have a higher level of alcohol problems, while men have stayed the same.
The study has been published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.
