German Man Recoving Well After Double Arm Transplant
October 8, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - A farmer from Germany is on the road to recovery after being the world’s first full double arm transplant recipient.
Doctors have come out and stated that the man, 54-year old Karl Merk, is doing much better than anyone could have predicted.
The procedure was necessary after the German farmer lost both of his arms.
He lost them just below each shoulder in an accident which had to do with his profession, farming.
Back on July 25-26, he went through a 15-hour operation which made him the first person in the world to receive a full double arm transplant.
There were over 40 medical doctors who put their skills to work to try to fix the 54-year old German farmer.
He has since been doing extremely well with the recovery. Doctors have stated that he now has regained use of both of his arms once again.
It is said though that it will be around two years before he is fully able to use his hands once again.
Once it is all said and done though, it is expected that he will make a full recovery.
He should return home within the next 4 to 6 weeks barring any setbacks.
