Washington (dbTechno) – What if you had the option to basically customize your baby, ending up with a designer baby? What if you could choose the color of their hair, eyes, etc, would you? A doctor who owns 2 fertility clinics in the U.S. is banking on many saying yes, I want a designer baby.
Dr. Jeff Steinberg is the owner of LA Fertility Institute and has clinics in both Manhattan as well as Los Angeles.
Within the next 6 months, he believes that he will be able to allow people to order designer babies.
This will give people the opportunity to choose a variety of things about their babies.
They will be able to customize their babies so that they can choose their hair color, eyes, skin color, and all of that stuff.
This is raising a lot of moral questions though as there are some who feel this could lead to a push to have a “perfect” race of babies.
The technology will not be perfect, but is believes to be most effective with parents who have a Scandinavian heritage.
This kicks off the question, would you actually pay for a custom-made designer baby that is all your own?
I guess only time will tell, as it is just a matter of months away.

Don’t these people realize that genes usually control more than one thing? For example a gene that controls hair or eye color can also be linked to macular degeneration later in life or liver issues. When these genes come together naturally I think there are more natural safeguards. I am afraid that these genetically altered blue eyed and blonde haired babies can have health issues due to the forced expression of these generally recessive traits. Were playing god with these children and I hope they don’t pay the price.
There are whole societies of blackhair brown eyes or blonde hair blue eyes, and none of them are showing mass extinction or great plagues or disease, so I don’t think that facial appearance is linked to major other traits like health. Also, it’s DEFINITELY not linked to neural ability, physicality, or other important traits like that, so it doesn’t even matter, to the child that’s implanted or to society as a whole. It’s people’s free rights, because what comes out of their gene pool belongs to them, also it won’t affect anybody else. Isn’t this the same as someone choosing a blonde husband or a brownhaired wife? Isn’t the same as someone saying, I prefer dating brunettes? It’s impossible to not have any preferences in life. This only gives more certainty to parents. No matter, doesn’t affect the child, they will still develop their own personality.
This is all ridiculous. Parents shouldn’t have the right to choose things like that. It’s the child’s life; not theirs. Even if the child is coming from the mother, she doesn’t, nor does the father, have the right to pick and choose colors and “prefrences” over the kid. They’re treating the child like a doll! This is god’s job. Any science created monster is not a child of god. Since when do we, humans, have the right to customize these things? It’s all absurd. If he, Dr. Steinberg, is so open to the future and science; why doesn’t he focus on something more important like cures to cancer or something? He’s wasting his time. This ISN’T going to expand.
