It was only a matter of time before the Boston Bruins played the Pittsburgh Penguins, allowing for a little payback to be handed out to Matt Cooke. The last time the two teams played, Cooke administered a blindsided hit to Marc Savard giving him a Grade 2 concussion and possibly ending his season.
Cooke came into tonight’s game a marked man, and it did not take long as not long into the game, he was challenged to a fight by Shawn Thornton only five seconds into his first shift. Cook was knocked to the ice and his helmet flew off, but Thornton kept swinging at him. Both received fighting majors, and Shawn Thornton received a misconduct penalty for continuing to hit Cooke when he fell.
The rash of headshots in the NHL this season is causing quite a stir around the league, and is making many team owners very nervous indeed. The league is moving very quickly to invoke tough love for players who feel it necessary to go head hunting, and recently sent out DVDs to all team brass outlining changes that are going to be made. They want to eliminate headshots from the game and will enact rule changes likely before the playoffs begin.
