After an intense month of soccer action the kings of the world, the Spanish football team returned home to their country a day after defeating the Netherlands in a sloppy game filled with fouls and yellow cards. Thousands of fans showed up at the Barajas airport in Madrid to welcome their heros home in what promises to be one of the biggest Spanish celebrations in recent memory.
The game itself was not one of the best from a viewer’s perspective as the first half was relatively lackluster in the opportunities department while both teams appeared to be nervous and it showed in their inability to string multiple passes together, resulting in many free kicks, the majority of which going the way of the Spaniards. The second half was more of the same with both sides actually having a few quality scoring chances but it was in the second 15 minutes of extra time wwen Spanish player Iniesta provided the magic touch.
Players will be taking part in an open bus parade today to celebrate their victory, complete with the World Cup in Toe. They will also be meeting with the Spanish king and prime minister. As for the Netherlands, they will be left to figure out what went wrong and to reflect on how close they came to taking home the covetted World Cup.
