Jean-Claude Mas breast implant company, Poly Implants Prostheses, has been charged with manufacturing substandard breast implants that allegedly lead to the death of one French woman. These implants can have a higher rate of failure, causing the silicon to rupture and leak into the body. There’s yet to be any proof that this causes cancer, but officials are urging women to preempt the threat by having them removed as soon as possible.
The problems arose from the company using industrial grade silicone, instead of surgical grade silicone that was approved for medical use to bring down costs.
Jean-Claude Mas had to pay a 100,000 Euro fine, and has been barred from leaving France altogether; he also can’t contact other executives (past and present) from Poly Implants Prostheses. So far, Brazil is the only country who is paying for the removal and replacement of the breast implants (both the public health service and the private insurance companies).
