Dog Loses Snout Being Hero To Save Girls
A dog in the Philippines recently risked her own life for her owner and lost her snout and upper jaw in the process, reports ABC News.
abang leapt in front of a motorcycle travelling at high speed that was pointed in the direction of her owner and her daughter, losing his muzzle in the heroic attempt.
Although the mixed-breed dog, whose age is unknown, survived her injuries, veterinarians in the Philippines did not have the technical skill or knowledge to perform reconstructive facial surgery to replace her snout.
A healthcare worker in Buffalo, New York heard of Kabang’s heroic actions and her plight and launched a fund-raising campaign to have her shipped to the U.S. She recently arrived at the University of California, Davis.
After a thorough medical evaluation, veterinarians there say they are delaying reconstructive surgery until they can first treat Kabang for heartworm and begin chemotherapy treatments for a tumor in her ******, according to Dr. Jane Sykes, director of the institution’s small-animal clinic.
“It’s an interesting phenomenon that has occurred with this dog,” Sykes said. “The story has touched so many people. It’s fascinating that it has attracted so much attention when, yes, there are lots of dogs in shelters, and that is a huge issue.”
She added: “I believe that Kabang is a great ambassador for dogs and what they can do for people. I think we owe her a service in return.”
