$50,0000 found in suitcase donated to Australian charity shop

A customer at a Queensland, Australia charity shop was about to pay $5 for a second-hand suitcase recently when staff at the shop opened it to make sure there was nothing inside. Imagine their surprise when money totaling AU$50,0000 was discovered hidden in the lining.

Staff contacted Queensland police who spent two weeks investigating where the money may have come from. An elderly woman eventually came forward who was able to tell them exactly how much money the suitcase contained. After questioning her to ascertain whether or not the money came from legal means, she was allowed to take the money home.

This isn’t the first time a large amount of money has been discovered in something donated to a charity shop, however. In Hertfordshire, England earlier in the year, staff at a charity set up to help the homeless found £9,000 (approximately US$13,700) hidden inside a sofa.

That discovery was also reported to police. They managed to track down a wealthy elderly man who said he had hidden the money in the sofa years before and promptly forgotten about it.

In that case, however, the man was nice enough to donate £500 to the homeless charity that had found it.
