Frightening winter storm in May for New York

May is usually spring in New York with the last of the winter snows melting away and the days warming. This weekend forecasters had projected a snowstorm for the record books in New York and other surrounding New England States.

School was cancelled for Friday throughout the state and fortunately the three day weekend precludes school on Monday. The New York governor Andrew Cuomo took the proactive step of declaring a State of Emergency for the entire state along with other New England state governors.

The Northern part of the state got a full 36 inches (3 feet) of snow which has blanketed the nearly 5,000-foot tall mountain in the Adirondacks, while Long Island got about 2 1/2 feet on Friday and Saturday, according to Whiteface Mountain spokesman Jon Lundin.

Lundin says the snow storm has forced the Olympic Regional Development Authority to close Whiteface Veteran’s Memorial Highway on the backside of the mountain.

Lundin says the snow began lightly falling Saturday and steadily dropped Sunday, finishing in the evening. He didn’t know if the 3-foot snowfall was a record for Whiteface.

Residents and municipal workers have been hard at work since Sunday clearing roads, digging out cars, and clearing driveways and sidewalks in up-state New York. For some the storm was as bad as predicted and tens of thousands of people are without electricity still in the wake of the storm.

In Syracuse, a brief period of flurries late on Friday night was the city’s latest occurrence of snow on record, topping the previous ‘latest snow’ record from May 17, 1973.

According to Accuweather, there were even reports of trees down in some parts of Vermont due to heavy snow.

Sunday was far more pleasant in the Southeast, with mostly dry weather and temperatures in the 70s and 80s.
