Cat Captured as Prison Mobile Phone Smuggler
Someone desperate to smuggle mobile phones and cell phone chargers into a Russian prison taped the banned items onto a cat in an attempt to have the feline serve as a prison courier.
But observant prison guards noticed the cat scaling one of the prison camp’s fences and were able to capture it before it was able to deliver its contraband package to someone waiting inside the penal institution. The cat courier was found to be carrying two cell phones and chargers as well as batteries.
Prison authorities in the Komi region of the country where the penal camp is located noted that this was the first time in the prison’s history that a cat was used in an attempt to smuggle in illegal goods into the camp. Although it was the first attempt to use an animal to smuggle in contraband goods, it may also prove to be the last since the attempt was easily foiled.
“They have foiled various attempts to smuggle banned objects into Prison Colony Number One before, but in the case of the cat, the prison colony is at a loss: nothing like this has happened in the prison’s history,” the regional prison service said.
There has been no word if officials are investigating the matter further to see if they can discover anyone claiming ownership of the black and white cat, whose photograph with contraband mobile phone materials still taped to its back, was shared with members of the news media.
