Toshiba Getting Aggressive With HD DVD Players

January 14, 2008

Toshiba is trying to keep the HD DVD format alive in the wake of the announcement that Warner Bros. would exclusively support the Blu-ray format. Toshiba is getting more aggressive with pricing as they have cut the price of three models of their HD DVD players.

Their entry-level HD DVD player model, the HD-A3 will now retail for $149.99, while the HD-A30 will retail for $199.99, and the HD-A35 will retail for $299.99.

There are pretty big price drops and come just in time to keep the HD DVD format in the race to rule the next-gen media war.

The big advantage right now when choosing between HD DVD over Blu-ray is the price point as that is the big thing that HD DVD has going for it. The HD DVD format tends to have cheaper players as well as cheaper movies.

Toshiba has been trying to get as big of an installed user base for HD DVD players as possible, but it is not easy as it is competing with Sony and the Blu-ray format. Since a Blu-ray player is packed into the Sony PlayStation 3, Sony has a big advantage right off the bat, and is winning with more players in people’s homes.

Toshiba hopes to cut this gap with these price drops.
