Rental Service Netflix Chooses Blu-ray Exclusively

Washington (dbTechno) – The DVD rental service Netflix has given another huge blow to the HD DVD format. Netflix has followed Hollywood studios and has announced that they will exclusively support the Blu-ray format for next-generation DVDs.

Netflix stated that the majority of Hollywood studios are now going to be supporting the Blu-ray format over the HD DVD format.

Netflix put out a statement which read, “As of now, Netflix will purchase only Blu-ray discs and will phase out by roughly year’s end the alternative high-def format, HD DVD, developed by Toshiba.”

Chief content officer for Netflix, Ted Sarandos, stated “The prolonged period of competition between two formats has prevented clear communication to the consumer regarding the richness of the high-def experience versus standard definition.”

“We’re now at the point where the industry can pursue the migration to a single format, bring clarity to the consumer and accelerate the adoption of high-def.”

Netflix stated that they expect all studios to begin to publish movies on the Blu-ray format if they do not do so already.

It seems that Netflix feels that the next-gen high-def format war is over, and Blu-ray is the de facto medium.
