Nintendo Fights Piracy, Smash Bros. Won’t Play On Modded Wii

Nintendo has reported that some Nintendo Wii consoles will not read the dual-layer Super Smash Bros. Brawl due to the system having dust and dirt on the laser. What they have yet to announce though is that they are also fighting piracy with the release of the game on the Wii, as it will not play if a mod chip is installed..Boston (dbTechno) – Nintendo has reported that some Nintendo Wii consoles will not read the dual-layer Super Smash Bros. Brawl due to the system having dust and dirt on the laser. What they have yet to announce though is that they are also fighting piracy with the release of the game on the Wii, as it will not play if a mod chip is installed.

Many who own modded Nintendo Wii consoles were not happy at all on Sunday when they brought home their retail copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and popped them into their Wii systems.

They were presented with a disk read error message, stating that the system could not read the disk.

Even those who were able to get past this screen ended up having the game freeze before they were able to start a match on the Wii.

So, many were wondering, is it a bad Wii that needs repair, or something else?

According to sources, those who have mod chips in their Nintendo Wii consoles are not able to load up Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as the game will simply not load.

An interesting thing to note though, is that people who were able to download and burn a copy of the game on a black dual-laver DVD, were able to load up the game fine.

So Nintendo has fought piracy in a sense with Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii, but did so in reverse. It seems that a retail copy of the game will not play in the modded console, but the free copy the hackers download will.

  • also there is a way to deactivate the chip to play the retail copy, and there is going to be an update un the wiikey soon ;)

  • I don’t own a modded Wii, but here’s why I find this tactic a bad move. Sure, these people modded their Wii, _but_ it punishes those that actually went out and bought the game. It will encourage those individuals to get the hacked copy in the future because why would they buy the game if they know it won’t work.

I’d like to clarify and state that I don’t object to Nintendo fighting piracy, it’s their business and their right to do so. I think they’ve made a mistake though in this instance that will force more piracy of this specific title because no individual is going to go spend $50 on a game they know won’t play in their system. I wonder how many of those people just boxed the game up and took it back to the store in response for a trade in on something else.

  • If “one” had a modded Wii why would “one” buy the game. Isn’t that the whole point of modding your Wii

  • This is incorrect.
Only the wiikey modchip will not play the retail game, the other chips work fine. D2Pro and d2ckey, do not know about argon.
The wiikey can use a simple on/off switch to turn the chip off as the chip works on the fly. I have installed numerous switches since then and the customers themselves are happy. The news source here is incorrect as one must take into account.

The dual layer pressed disk of the ssbb starts at a different layerbreak then the backed up copies. One simply has to change the wiilkey’s code to look for the layerbreak on the fly to fix this.

  • So in fact Nintendo is encouraging piracy! If people with modded consoles can’t play a legitimate copy they have no choice but to play an illegal version.

  • It will be hacked :)

  • —If “one” had a modded Wii why would “one” buy the game. Isn’t that the whole point of modding your Wii—-

^^^^ Had to repeat that quote since it destroys the whole point some here are making.

Fact is, you mod your Wii to play illegal copies of the game. Not to go out and buy a legal copy.

  • My wii is not modded, but I’m thinking of doing it not to pirate games, but as a way to get around the international regions system. As a PAL user currently in Latin America, I cannot play anything new right now.
More over, as a PAL user, I’m regularly screwed in term of release dates (thanks Atlus for releasing the games in Europe one year after at least , smash bros will be there in fall only ) and in terms of price (why do I have to pay twice the price people in Us are paying for (RE 4) ? I don’t care about the translations of the game. )

  • I don’t know.. I have a modded wii, but I still bought a copy of the game. It’s not that I modded my wii just to get copies of the game. I only buy the original games if I really want it. Like… hell yeah I’m going to get Mario kart when it comes out. Just like I bought Twilight Princess and all the other games that are worthy of buying. But to buy Cooking Mama or Big Brain Academy full price doesn’t make sense and isn’t really worth my money.

  • —If “one” had a modded Wii why would “one” buy the game. Isn’t that the whole point of modding your Wii—-

Some people don’t have DL burners so they can’t burn the 7.5GB version of SSBB.

  • Thats dumb how they made Brawl not work on Wiis with mod chips. My brother kept saying that he thought it wasn’t the Wii that brawl wouldn’t work on he thought My family bought a crap version of Brawl. Now I can laugh at him because he was wrong but I’m still sad that it didn’t work.

  • This has nothing to do with piracy, it’s simply there to stop people in the EU who have modded their Wii’s to remove region protection getting the game early by buying an American copy.

    If anything it’s forcing piracy.

  • What a terrible article. “It seems that a retail copy of the game will not play in the modded console, but the free copy the hackers download will.” – 15 yr olds pirating games are not generally referred to as hackers. One would think that a dbtechno admin would know the difference.

  • I INSTALL WIIKEY ON SOME OF THE WII CONSOLE AND I FIX SO SOME OF MY FRIEND COULD PLAY A Smash Bros. THERE ARE THERE STEP….BUT IN THE RETURN OF THIS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO COPY A Smash Bros. dual-layer DVD I TRY EVERY THING BUT I CANT NOT COPY IT.

  • I Know on another forum this guy’s modded wii can play both copied and retail smash bros.

  • Haha what an idiots, i got it burned and cracked on my wii. Owned again nintendo

  • i have just bought mario wii for christmas and it wont work on my chipped wii, fucin baws and its going back tomorrow.

Why would i buy a original game when i have a chipped wii?

I bought my chipped wii last year in asia, i also bought 20 games with it, i wanted mario but cant find a illegal copy so bought the original, now i have actually done a good thing i am being punished.

  • Another thing nintendo should remember is, why did i buy a chipped wii in the first place, ?

Because the games are to frickin expenisve, you say we aRE CRIMINALS but rapeing the console player ina credit crunch is more criminal, its just legal rape.

The same as my argument for illegal music, why would i buy a cd when i can hear it on the radio for free, i may really like it but sometimes i would rather do without,

If it wasnt free it doesnt mean i would be paying
