Washington (dbTechno) – Netflix has announced that they have signed a deal with start-up company Roku to make a set-top box which will allow Netflix subscribers to have movies streamed directly to their TV sets when they want to rent something.
This new service is going to basically be an on-demand type service from Netflix. The new service is called “Watch instantly” and is going to allow subscribers who purchase this set-top box to watch any movie right away with the click of a button.
It is believed that the new set-top box will have DVD-quality video and sound, and is said to be priced at around $99. All reports thus far state that it will be a far superior device to Apple TV.
Initially, there will be 10,000 movies available as part of the service, which is not many considering the Netflix library has over 100,000 movies and TV shows on DVD.
Regardless though this is a huge step forward for Netflix as they move more towards digital distribution, adding to their DVD rental service by mail.
