Son of Rambow
DVD Review
Paramount Home Entertainment
Released: August 26, 2008
The second you look at the cover of this DVD release of Son of Rambow, you are going to laugh. This is because you immediately see the image, and then compare it to the image of Sylvester Stallone playing the real Rambo. From that point onward, you can expect to be very entertained.
It is always fun to go back in time, take something, and then basically make fun of it. This is because once you know something and see it so many times, the excitement of it begins to wear off.
Son of Rambow is a story which revolves around two young kids, Will Proudfoot and Lee Carter, played by Bill Milner and Will Poulter. The two young boys share detention together, and immediately team up. Lee is looking for a stuntman to help him film his very own version of Rambo: First Blood, and Will may just be the guy for the job.
Will, never having seen any type of television show, or movie, is stunned when he tries to take on the role of Rambo.
The film is actually very touching, while still being extremely funny at the same time. This is because you get to see the two boys join together. The two boys create quit ea bit of magic on-screen, facing childhood issues, while letting their imagination run wild at the same time. They will surely run into their issues along the way, but this is one film that both kids and adults will have a blast watching.
The audio and video quality for this DVD release are rather impressive, as you get the video presented in widescreen, with great colors, flesh-tones, etc. You also get a high-quality audio mix presented in Dolby Digital 5.1.
The only downside to the audio mix is the fact that the sound effects and such are a bit front-heavy. Beyond that though the dialogue is extremely clear throughout.
In regards to extras, you get a nice commentary track presented by director Garth Jennings, producer Nick Goldsmith, as well as actors Will Poulter and Bill Milner. The audio commentary track is a lot of fun to listen to as you get to hear from the young actors, and those who directed them along the way.
On top of that, you also get the short film Aron, which is what gave the idea for the movie Son of Rambow, as well as a making-of feature.
The final addition in regards to extras is the short film from the Son of Rambow contest winner.
Paramount Home Entertainment did a great job with this DVD release, as this is an extremely entertaining film which has some fantastic characters, and plenty of fun comedy. With some nice extras, and a high-quality transfer to DVD, this one is well-worth checking out!
Film: 8.2 A very fun and entertaining film with some fantastic characters, and plenty of comedy.
Video: 8.0 A nice and clear video transfer with minimal grain, well-done.
Audio: 8.2 A little too front-heavy at times, but for the most part all is crisp and clear.
Extras: 7.8 A nice set of extras with the added short film, and solid audio commentary.
Final Score: 8.2
