Washington (dbTechno) – The culture secretary in Britain, Andy Burnham, has proposed that a ratings system be put in place for web sites, similar to how films are rated.
He told the Daily Telegraph in London that he has plans to sit down and talk with President-elect Barack Obama on this very issue.
He hopes to be able to come up with a new set of international rules for web sites that are presented in the English language.
The whole idea behind this is to try and implement a rating system into Web sites.
This means that sites would be rated just like films are rated as G, PG, PG-13, R, etc.
Burnham is pushing to make it clear that this is not an attack against free speech in any way.
Instead, the goal here is to try and make the internet a safer place so people understand where theya re going.
He is pushing to try and have sites be labeles as child-safe, and similar objectives.
With ratings being seen in movies, video games, TV-shows, etc, it is only logical for Web sites to be on deck.
Who will decide what “mature” means? How will the British ensure that ratings aren’t dictated by secretive, puritanical Nazis a la the US film ratings board? This sounds like a threat to free speech.
“Culture Secretary” is a sort of sinecure post designed to reward slack-witted politicos with what they dimly perceive is a responsible position with an impressive title, but is in reality a safe nook where they can do little harm to anything important. Nobody pays much attention to what a Culture Secretary says, but occasionally they do manage to embarrass themselves.
