The Truman Show Blu-ray Review

dbTechno The Truman Show Blu-ray ReviewThe Truman Show

Blu-ray Review
Paramount Home Entertainment
Released: December 30, 2008

The Truman Show is a very unique movie that was honestly ahead of its time, especially with all of the popularity reality TV shows garner now in terms of entertaining people all around the world.  This interesting feature has received a release on the Blu-ray format right at the tail-end of the year 2008.

The Truman Show stars Jim Carrey who plays a regular guy living an ordinary life.  He is married to a woman played by Laura Linney, and is pretty happy for the most part.

Everything that he is doing though is pretty average for the most part, as he goes through his routine life, encountering things along the way.

What he doesn’t know though is that he is the star of his own reality T V program, The Truman Show.  He goes through life not knowing he lives in this artificial world along the way.

Truman finally gets up the courage to try and see other places though, and decided to burst out of the bubble.  Along the way, he makes some amazing discoveries, including things about the show itself, in an interesting tale that will not be forgotten.

Jim Carrey plays the role nicely here as the whole story plot unfolds with great attention to detail and character development.  The film is not for everyone, but it is certainly worth checking out.

The video transfer for The Truman Show on Blu-ray is very strong throughout as the black levels are solid, and the colors come across as very vibrant in each and every scene.  I went back and compared it to the DVD release and was pleasantly surprised to see the big upgrade to the Blu-ray format.

The audio is very well-done also and is presented in a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix, using the front and rear channels nicely as everything is spaced out in such a way to create a great atmosphere for the feature.

In regards to the extras, these are the same extras I saw on my special edition release of The Truman Show I currently own.

The best part of the extras is the two-part making of documentary which runs for nearly 45-minutes or so, and touches on the characters, story, etc.

Going beyond that though we really do not have much else as you get some deleted scenes, trailers, TV spots, and a feature on the visual effects.

The Truman Show is a good release for the Blu-ray format but the lack of new special features is a bit disappointing for me.  Regardless though, the film is unique enough and entertaining to the point where it is well-worth adding to your Blu-ray collection.

Film: 8.5 A very well-done film and a great performance from Jim Carrey make this highly-entertaining.

Video: 9.0 Strong video transfer to high-def.

Audio: 8.9
Nice use of the front and rear channels.

Extras: 7.0
Good stuff, but nothing new.

Final Score: 8.2
