The Secret Life of the American Teenager Season One
DVD Review
ABC Studios
Released: December 30, 2008
The Secret Life of the American Teenager airs on ABC Family with the first season being released on the DVD format for the first time.
The Secret Life of the American Teenager attempts to try and connect with the teen crowd out there as we are thrown into Ulysses S. Grant High School and introduced to a series of characters that fit various stereotypes.
These include the jock, the nice band girl, the guy who dates all of the girls, etc.
The story revolves around a girl named Amy, who is smart, and is seemingly doing everything right. She runs into trouble though as she gets pregnant, and now faces troubles in high school because of it. The first season will catch you in the 11 episodes, but will ultimately have you wanting more as many questions remain for season two.
The first season really just scratches the surface as we are introduced to all of the characters, and the story plot is laid out.
The video and audio quality for the release is well-done as the video is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio, while the audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. Both the audio and video are impressive with the audio being very front-heavy overall.
In terms of the extras, the only feature is On Set With The Cast, which has some short interviews with the cast of the show. There are a few other things, but not enough unfortunately.
The Secret Life of the American Teenager season one is a good entry on the DVD format for the new series, but is lacking in the extras department. If you want to get caught up though before next season, the show will certainly please its fanbase.
Episodes: 8.0 The characters all fit the various stereotypes, and the performances are fairly strong. You are left with many questions going into season two.
Video: 8.5 A good video transfer overall, very clear.
Audio: 8.0 Front-heavy, but a solid presentation.
Extras: 5.0 Disappointing,
Final Score: 7.9
