Washington (dbTechno) – The sales of both Blu-ray players as well as movies skyrocketed 400% to end the year 2008 according to the latest reports.
The British Video Association has announced that Blu-ray sales spiked 400% in December 2008 compared to the same month one year ago.
They based their information on data from the Official Charts Company, citing major sales in both players and movies.
According to reports, 1.5 million Blu-ray movies were sold in the month of December, a huge rise.
This is a surprising thing to say the least as many thought that sales of Blu-ray movies were not going all that well.
Sales were helped a great deal though thanks to the release of big films such as The Dark Knight on Blu-ray.
I hate it when articles go “WOOO! x grows 400%!” without saying just how sad and pathetic the original numbers were.
According to Variety, in 2007 the UK moved just 800,000 Blu-Ray discs. Blu-Ray and DVD combined to sell 248,800,000 discs.
That means last year Blu-ray made up a sad and lonley 0.32% of the market.
In 2008 they managed to sell 3,700,000 discs and combined with DVD to move 256,700,000 discs.
Which means the huge Blu-Ray explosive growth? Yeah, all the way up to 1.44% of the entire home based video market.
So, yeah, 0.32% to 1.44% technically is a some 400-odd percent increase… but only because the 2007 numbers were so pathetically small to begin with.
What happens to the 3.7 million Blu-Ray discs sold when you remove Iron Man and Dark Knight? Did those two titles account for 1/2 of all Blu-Ray sales? More? What does that say about the popularity of the rest of the library or lack thereof?
