The Bourne Trilogy
Blu-ray Review
Universal Home Entertainment
Released: January 27, 2009
It has been a long-time coming, but The Bourne Trilogy is finally getting its big release on the Blu-ray format thanks to Universal.
Universal is set to bring the blockbuster trilogy to the high-def format for the first time, with the release set for January 27, 2009.
The Bourne Trilogy consists of The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, as well as The Bourne Ultimatum.
This three-disc Blu-ray set comes with a very nice-looking case which contains all three movies as well as a slew of extras. Each film received a BF-50 dual layer presentation in full 1080p as well as DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1
The films themselves, for those of you who do not know, tell the story of Jason Bourne (Matt Damon). Bourne is an elite government agent who basically is trying to find out his own identity and his past as the story progresses.
The first film, The Bourne Identity, focuses a great deal of attention on his own identity, as he ends up being the target of his own government. From here, we are thrown into The Bourne Supremacy, with Bourne surviving the first film and is now hell-bent on revenge as an assassin. This all culminates with The Bourne Ultimatum, where he is on the hunt to figure out who stole his real identity, whipped his memory, etc.
All three of these films feature some of the most breathtaking fight sequences and car chase sequences I have ever seen to be quite honest, as they are simply stunning.
Matt Damon does a fantastic job in the role as Jason Bourne in every one of the films, and his supporting cast is very impressive as well. Needless to say, anyone who enjoys thrilling action will immediately fall in love with The Bourne Trilogy.
The three movies have received, as stated above, 1080p transfers on the Blu-ray format, and each of them looks absolutely flawless in high-def. The colors have a great deal of pop to them as there are some amazing little detail you will pick out if you really pay attention. The special effects, flesh-tones, black levels, everything tied together make these Blu-ray movies as flawless as you can get.
The same can be said about the DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 tracks for each of the three movies. This is demo-quality audio here as the dialogue, score, and sound effects, especially in the car chase scenes will rock your home theater like no movie has ever done so before. Amazing stuff!
Going beyond the movies themselves, as well as the impressive audio and video mixes, we dig into the good stuff, the impressive extras on the Blu-ray release. All three films have received some fantastic Blu-ray exclusives which will take you days to get through to be quite honest.
We are going to try our best to break down the extras for each of the three films, but to be honest I am sure we are going to miss some stuff simply because there is so much here to be had.
For The Bourne Identity, we will start out with the simple stuff first, including deleted scenes, an alternate opening and ending, as well as feature commentary by director Doug Liman.
From there, there are also several featurettes which touch on a variety of things in the film, including The Ludlum Identity, The Ludlum Supremacy, The Ludlum Ultimatum, The Birth of The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Mastermind: Robert Ludlum, and others.
These featurettes touch on a variety of thing such as the origins of the film, how it all came together, etc. From there, there are also features looking at the fight sequence in the film, as well as the music video Extreme Ways by Moby.
Going into the more Blu-ray geared extras, there is a fantastic U-Control track as well as BD-Live features including a card battle game, my movie commentary, and my chat features.
The Bourne Supremacy has an equally impressive set of extras, also starting out with deleted scenes as well as feature commentary with director Paul Greengrass.
We move forward with another extensive set of featurettes that cover a variety of things, such as fight training, a feature on the special effects, casting, and more.
One featurette I really enjoyed was Anatomy of a Scene: The Explosive Bridge Chase scene, a very cool thing to check out. There are also many Blu-ray geared extras here as well including another U-Control track, as well as the same BD-Live features as in the first film with my chat, my movie commentary, and the strategy game.
The Bourne Ultimatum also starts out with audio commentary from director Paul Greengrass, as well as another set of very cool deleted scenes.
Many of the featurettes here focus on some of the action in the film, including the features Planning the Punches, Driving School, New York Chase, as well as Rooftop Pursuit. Each of these are actually really well-done as I enjoyed each of the features on this release a great deal. It is always fun to go back and see how they did certain things.
This film also features its very own U-Control mix which is very in-depth, as well as BD-Live features with my chat, my movie commentary, and the same strategy game back again.
The Bourne Trilogy is definitely the best release on Blu-ray for the year 2009, and could be up there at the end of the year as this one is going to have some legs. The films are incredible, the amount of extras here will blow you away, and the high-def presentations are flawless. The Bourne Trilogy is what Blu-ray is all about! If you own a Blu-ray player, you have to own Bourne!
Films: 9.5 An amazing trilogy of films with stunning action, and edge-of-your seta twists and turns.
Video: 9.5 Flawless video transfers, amazing stuff.
Audio: 10 Demo-quality audio for each film!
Extras: 9.5 Each of the three movies are stuffed with extras, great Blu-ray exclusive stuff too!
Final Score: 9.8
