Paycheck
Blu-ray Review
Paramount Home Entertainment
Released: May 19, 2009
Paycheck, starring Ben Afleck, Aaron Eckhart, and Uma Thurman is a very intense thriller, and one I was excited to see make it to the Blu-ray format.
Paycheck was directed by none other than John Woo, who is no stranger to keeping us on the edge of our seats with movies such as Face/Off, and does not fail here one bit.
The job of Ben Afleck’s character is to basically take on these jobs where is does top-secret projects as a computer engineer. When the job is complete, he has his memory wiped so he does not remember a thing.
Needless to say, he runs into problems though when a 3-year job goes wrong, as he is told after his memory was wiped that he gave up an 8-figure paycheck.
This puts Jennings on the road to revenue as he tries to unravel what happened, what went wrong, etc.
Paycheck was a very intense and entertaining movie when I first saw it, and it was just as much funto go back and check it out again on Blu-ray.
The video transfer here is top-notch with some very bright and vibrant colors throughout with the film being presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio in full 1080p. Some of these scenes have some immense detail, giving them a lot of pop, a strong video transfer.
I was anticipating the audio mix here since this is such an action-heavy film, and I was not disappointed as the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix does a great job of using the front and rear channels effectively to engross you in the action. When you turn this one up, you are going to feel it, great atmosphere.
The extras are the only disappointment of the release as they all come from the past DVD release of the film.
We start out with two separate audio commentary tracks one with John Woo and the other with screenwriter Dean Georgaris.
From here, we are presented with your ordinary making-of featurette, as well as a separate feature looking at the stunts of the film.
There are deleted/extended scenes included as well, six of them in total for fans to check out.
Paycheck is well-work picking up on Blu-ray despite the lacking extras, a great thriller from John Woo that fans of movies such as Face/Off will surely enjoy!
Film: 8.5 A great thriller that does a good job of pacing itself and keeping you on the edge of your seat.
Video: 9.2 A very strong video transfer, vibrant colors.
Audio: 9.0 An aggressive mix that sets a very nice atmosphere.
Extras: 6.5 Definitely the low point of the release, very bland.
Final Score: 8.2
