Revolutionary Road Blu-ray Review

Blu-ray Review
Paramount Home Entertainment
Release: June 2, 2009

I had some high hopes for Revolutionary Road, which reunites Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet for the first time in a drama since the hit Titanic.  With that said, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed in the result.

Revolutionary Road is a story which showcases an amazing level of character drama, without going over-the-top with anything beyond just that, the characters.

The two do a great job in their roles, as expected as these are two of the best that Hollywood has to offer in my honest opinion.

For me though, there just seemed to be something missing in a few spots with the story that kept this from being the masterpiece that so many praised it to be.

There is clearly a lot of emotions running rampant with the characters, as they try their best to save their marriage amidst being unhappily together with kids, engrossed in affairs, etc.

Is Revolutionary Road a masterpiece, no, not at all.  It is though one heck of an emotional ride that fans of these two will thoroughly enjoy.

For the Blu-ray release, Paramount has done a fantastic job with the video transfer.  The simplistic nature of the film in terms of the way it was shot makes for a very appealing and clean video transfer in full 1080p.  To be quite honest, I was pretty impressed with just how good high-def helped out in terms of the presentation of this flick.

Audio for the Blu-ray release is presented in a crystal clear track, with my only complaint being that it is a tad bit front-heavy at times.  Beyond that though, Paramount clearly did their part in bringing the film to life on Blu-ray in terms of the audio.  A huge step up from what we are given on DVD.

Paramount did a good job with the extras, starting out with a feature looking at the novel that the film was based on in, Yates: The Wages of Truth.  Beyond that, the rest of the extras are straight from the DVD release and are all in full HD.

These extras include a decent making-of track, as well as deleted scenes with optional commentary by director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Justin Haythe.

The extras are rounded out with a great commentary track by Mendes and Haythe, definitely the highlight.

Revolutionary Road is not a feel-good movie, but it is a drama that will leave you speechless in the end, worth checking out on Blu-ray.

Film: 8.0 A very strong drama starring two of Hollywood’s best.

Video: 9.2 A fantastic Blu-ray transfer per usual from Paramount.

Audio: 9.0 Dialogue-driven and front-heavy, but crystal clear at the same time.

Extras: 7.0
Extras are respectable, but I would have liked more for a Blu-ray release.

Final Score: 8.2
