I didn’t really have high hopes heading into my review of Van Wilder Freshman Year, and thank goodness that was the case as this is one movie that should not carry high expectations along with it.

This is basically a prequel as it takes you to freshman year at Coolidge College with Van Wilder being played this time by Jonathan Bennett.

The story plot here is a little whacked, as first of all our main character does not look like a freshman in college, and on top of that, the situations he is put in are a stretch to say the least.

There are plenty of jokes to be had here, but many of them are rip-offs from the original movie, making this look more like an attempt to cash in on the original’s success more than anything else.

The extras included on the DVD release are respectable, with a commentary track by director Hary Glazer and the cast,a s well as a making-of featurette.

There are some other little creative throw-ins, including bloopers, Van Wilder’s party supplies, an orientation video for the college and more.

Unfortunately Van Wilder Freshman Year is more of a rehash than anything else, and will not even please fans of the original. This is one to avoid.

Movie: 2.0 Awful

Video: 8.0

Audio: 7.8

Extras: 8.2 Surprisingly some creative extras are included here.

Final Score: 4.5
