The Biggest Loser
Wii Review
Publisher: THQ
Developer: THQ
Released: October 2009
The Nintendo Wii has spawned a wide variety of exercise games following the release of the extremely successful Wii Fit. That is why it is not very shocking to see a release of The Biggest Loser on the home console.
The Biggest Loser has been a huge hit on television for years, and is one of the most popular shows in the NBC arsenal.
It has been responsible for helping motivate millions of people all across the U.S. to lose weight and live healthier lifestyles.
The Biggest Loser on the Wii tries to capture that same type of magic from the TV show and bring it over to the home console, but does it work?
When you start out with The Biggest Loser on the Wii, you have to create a fitness program for yourself.
You create your own persona in th egame basically, and you then pick a contestant from the show that you are most similar to, followed by the decision to work out with Bob or Jillian, the two trainers.
The fitness program that the game allows you to partake in and sets up for you depends on what you want to do. If you want it to be an educational tool to live healthier, you can set it up that way. If you want it to set up ap rogram to lose a small amount of weight, you can do that too, etc.
From here, you are brought to your home page where it shows you how many calories you can consume daily, and also lets you track what you have actually consumed through putting it into the program.
There are a nice variety of exercises here for you to partake in that utilize the Wii Balance Board, as well as the other Wii controllers.
Similar to past fitness games, you will earn points based on how well you do the exercises. The biggest issue I had with this though is that the game really was not all that accurate in understanding how well or how poorly you performed them. It always seemed to lean more towards saying you did things correctly, even if you know you were not doing it the proper way.
The Biggest Loser on the Wii is more of a tool to help you maintain an exercise program more than it is a tool to really help you work out.
The game does great in allowing you to keep track of calories, how much you are putting into your body, and what you should be putting into your body to achieve your weight loss goals.
On top of that, it helps you follow the calorie numbers by providing several different recipes that will fit just about any taste, and any lifestyle, whether it be on-the-go, or a nice family sit-down meal.
This is where the game truly shines, as an educational tool to help you truly become healthier with your lifestyle.
If you buy The Biggest Loser thinking it will be the only thing you n eed to lose weight, you will be greatly disappointed. If, however, you purchase it and are set to really start an exercise program, this could be a great tool to complement that program. The game is not perfect as a standalone fitness game due to its lack of exercises, and how they are executed in-game, but as an educational tool, it is a lot of fun and very helpful. For fans of the show who are looking for something to help them live healthier, this is not a bad choice at all and definitely not a way to simply cash-in on the shows success.
Graphics: 7.0 The character models are pretty well-done, far from what the Wii could handle though.
Audio: 7.5 Pretty standard stuff, voices from the show are accurate.
Gameplay: 5.0 The exercises are not taught all that well and are not accurately scored.
Replay Value: 7.8 Definitely enjoyable and helpful as a long-term tool to live healthier.
Final Score: 7.0
