Paddy Power, a bookmaker, is being criticized by both the transgender community and UK Advertising Standard Authority for a Ladies’ Day advertisement. The day is part of the Cheltenham Festival. The ad features several people and unseen voices trying to guess the gender of the person naming them as mares or stallions. The authority agreed with its 92 complaints that the ad was offensive to the transgender community and encouraged discrimination against people dealing with complicated issues. The ad is banned unless is undergoes significant changes. Power said he had checked with members of the transgender community and had been assured his ad would be acceptable. He also said he never intended to hurt anyone. However, those Power consulted said they were not made aware of the ad’s entire content, and they did oppose some of the scenes.
