Big Fat Gypsy Investigation
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has once again been called to investigate advertisement slogans for the popular cable show “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding”.
The slogan reads, Bigger. Fatter. Gypsier. and features pictures of Gypsy boys and girls. The advertisement prompted 372 complaints from the UK.
Earlier this year, the ASA started an investigation on the ads and stated that the ads “might not be to everyone’s taste” but they did not think the ads would cause a big offense to people in the communities.
The ASA were made aware that the people offended were of the Gypsy Traveller community.
The director of the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain, Yvonne MacNamara, hopes that the ASA investigation will be a turning point in how Travellers and Gypsies are depicted in the world wide media.
“My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” originated in the UK and has recently made it to the States via the cable channel TLC.
