Steve Harvey Gets Emotional Phone Call
Steve Harvey, current host of the game show Family Feud, broke down emotionally after receiving a call wishing him happy birthday. The call came from longtime friends and early supporters of his career Rich and Becky Liss during a special birthday episode of Harvey’s daytime talk show.
Harvey, who has recently been announced as the host for the NAACP Image awards, was visibly shaken and began to openly weep while the conference call between the three took place. Harvey credited the couple with helping him launch his career by supporting him as a standup comedian when he was just getting his start.
“I was 26 years old, struggling. I didn’t have nothing and these people owned a furniture store in Cleveland. They took me in and gave me a contract with my little carpet cleaning company,” says Harvey. “When I became a comedian at 27, I didn’t have money to travel. They gave me an account at their travel agency and I ran up a bill that was $11,000 just traveling and try to make it. Those people right there, they helped me out!”
When he pulls himself together, he says:
“I got money now, Rich! Matter of fact, I’m gonna send a plane to pick up you and Becky, I’m gonna fly you to Chicago to see the show. I’ve been looking for you for years,” says Harvey.
Harvey, along with other African-American performers who have overcome adversity will be honored at the NAACP awards. Harvey, who will be hosting the show, has credited the Liss couple with backing him financially as he started a carpet company and then later during his fledgling standup comedy career.
