Coronation Street Gets 8.4m Viewers To Watch Fire

Coronation Street maintains lead in Ratings War with Eastenders

ITV’s flagship soap opera Coronation Street continued to beat its main rival BBC’s Eastenders in the ratings with Sunday’s hour long special attracting an estimated 8.4 million viewers. The episode broadcast at 7pm on ITV1 revealed innocent Jason is to take the blame for the fire that destroyed the iconic Rovers Return pub; the episode pulled in an estimated audience share of 32.1 percent as the soap continued to dominate the early evening viewing figures. Overnight viewing figures showed the fire story that has built for several weeks alongside Tyrone’s domestic abuse trial storyline has allowed Coronation Street to leap ahead in the ratings. Eastenders sources admitted the BBC soap has not been at its best recently, but hopes to return to the top of the ratings with the return of well known characters in the coming weeks.

Last week’s Monday night episode during which the Rovers Return was burned to the ground by Karl was viewed by more than 12 million people. Eastenders has recently been attracting between seven and nine million viewers as well loved cast members have been leaving the show at regular intervals. Both soaps regularly pull in viewing figures in 2013 well below their all time highs of more than 19 million for a Coronation Street episode in 2003 and over 16 million for Eastenders live episode in 2010.
