Actor Harrison Ford won’t be lonely during his unexpected hospitalization at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital for a broken ankle. Wife, actress Calista Flockhart, immediately left the couple’s home in California in order to be by her husband’s bedside after an accident on the set of “Star Wars, Episode VII” left him incapacitated. Although initial reports indicated that the extent of Ford’s injuries were damage to his ankle, more information has been forthcoming about the 71-year old actor’s prognosis.
According to Ford’s son, restaurateur and chef Ben Ford, the actor will not only need surgery on his ankle to insert necessary screws and plates for the healing process. But now doctors are saying that Ford may need as much as two months’ recovery time.
Unidentified sources on the set say that a malfunctioning door aboard the Millenium Falcon spacecraft where filming was taking place at Pinewood Studios in England did more than bang up Ford’s ankle. There are now reports that he also suffered injuries to his pelvis as well as chest.
A source told UK newspaper the Mirror “The hope is that before too long Harrison can return and film scenes from the waist up while his ankle heals.”
Disney also released a statement confirming Harrison’s injury on the set of “Star Wars: Episode VII” last week.
“Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming today on the set of “Star Wars,” the studio said at the time. “He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care. Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates.”
The long-awaited “Star Wars” sequel is scheduled to premiere worldwide in December of 2015. But Ford’s injuries may cause the proposed December 15 release date to be delayed, although studio sources said they remained optimistic they could shoot around Ford in the coming weeks without creating any loss of production time in the film’s current schedule. Filming was expected to resume later this week, with Ford set to participate, thanks to camera angles that only focus on the actor from his waist up. Ford and Flockhart have been married for four years.
They have been a steady couple ever since meeting several years ago at the Golden Globe ceremonies in Los Angeles, where they are celebrity regulars helping to serve the homeless at the downtown Mission on Thanksgiving.
