66-pitch perfect game: HS Senior Sets Record

On Wednesday he became the first pitcher at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, Calif., ever to pitch a perfect game. What’s more, he did it in only 66 pitches, reports Yahoo News.

As reported by the San Jose Mercury News, Strem led his Lancers to victory over the Monta Vista Matadors in the first round of the California Central Coast Section Division 1 playoffs. His performance included 48 strikes and 8 strikeouts in the 7-inning game. Strem retired 21 batters for an average of just 3 pitches per batter.

The Matadors hung tough, however, keeping the game tied until the 6th inning, when Mark Cardinalli drove in 2 runs for the Lancers. Monta Vista’s pitcher Peter Stern allowed only 3 hits and had 8 strikeouts.

Strem’s overall record is 28-4-0 and his league record is 11-3-0. He ranks #8 in California and #30 nationwide. He’s also a heavy hitter, with a batting average of .400.

The top-seeded St. Francis Lancers ended the game with a 2-0 victory over 16th-seeded Monta Vista. They’ll move on to play either Valley Christian in San Jose or Wilcox in Santa Clara in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

When the time was right he dropped to one knee and popped the big question of “Will you marry me?” Once he opened the ring box everything went wrong. The ring flew out of the box and fell through a crack in the bridge. Immediately Walling climbed onto the bridge looking for the ring.

While he was on the bridge onlookers got the wrong idea and assumed that he was attempting to commit suicide. This resulted in people telling him not to jump. Soon police arrived on the scene. Once police discovered what was going on they stopped traffic on the bridge so that the ring could be found.

After some searching the ring was found. The ring was slightly damaged from being run over by a car. All diamonds were intact but the setting experienced some damage.

According to the groom to be this entire thing was not his fault. He blames the ring box for this proposal disaster.

Overall this is quite a story and an unforgettable proposal.

gisele bundchen nets $3 million and $5 million H&M deal

The popular retailer is looking to expand internationally and have hired the model to front their 2013 autumn/winter campaign. The highly paid supermodel has previously worked with the Swedish retailer in their previous spring/summer 2011 campaign.

Bundchen, who topped Forbes’ Highest Paid Models list last year is very accustomed to high profile contracts. Her annual earnings come in at an impressive $45 million. She is currently a spokes model for Chanel beauty in addition to contracts with Oral B, Pantene and DIRECTV.

Aside from modeling and juggling motherhood Bundchen has her own collection of sandals, a eco friendly cosmetic company and a joint-venture with Hope, Brazil’s largest lingerie retailer.

It is very obvious that she is very busy and is working on building quite the empire. Only time will tell what multi million dollar contract will be next for Bundchen and when she plans on slowing down.

ESPN layoffs will eliminate jobs from its workforce of 7,000 employees

“The majority of the layoffs today and tomorrow are in Technology…something like 40 people, at least that’s what I’ve heard,” the source told Deadspin. “All three HR people assigned to Technology are handling layoffs today and tomorrow. No idea what is going on in the other departments. I was told ESPN was forced, by Disney, to do the layoffs due to profit margins. The end numbers / percentages, may not be exactly what they’re telling us as we’re being laid off.”

Shortly thereafter ESPN released a statement regarding the layoffs explaining that they are seeking to enhance their growth while keeping managing costs under control.

“We are implementing changes across the company to enhance our continued growth while smartly managing costs, “the sports media giant said in a statement Tuesday. ” While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive.”

The sports broadcaster added that although lay-offs are difficult, they believe that it will help make them more productive and competitive overall. The company did not release an exact number, but many are speculating that about 300 to 400 people will be affected.

One laid-off employee stated that they were told the broadcast network had chosen to cut 10% across the entire board. The employee also stated that he was told that the company needed to make the cuts in order to reach their profit margin.

The laid-off ESPN employee writes: “I was laid off from ESPN today (Tuesday) after 9 and a half years. Completely out of the blue, no warning at all. I was told it was 10% across the board, which would be roughly 400. I was told the reason was they needed to make their profit margin and they chose to do that via layoff of staff.” Deadspin

While the news of ESPN Layoffs may come as a shock, it does not to industry experts that are aware of Disney owned conglomerates. Disney owns 80% of ESPN and has been forcing cuts in many divisions. Walt Disney Studios was hit by a large amount of lay-offs as was its newly purchased LucasArts studio.

The last time that ESPN intuited any large scale lay-offs was in 2009 when the company laid off 100 employees, according to the New York Times.

2 day ferris wheel record set

Clint Shepard, a 32–year-old male operations manager at Chicago’s Navy Pier Lakefront attraction, broke the record in the Guinness Book World Records for the longest Ferris wheel ride.

On the weekend of May 19 through May 21, 2013, Armed Forces weekend, Shepard road the Navy Pier’s 15 story high Ferris wheel for 48 hours straight, breaking the previous record of 30 hours and 35 seconds belonging to a man residing in Canada. Navy Pier had been packed with guest as they offered free admission to military members and their families. It was a perfect day for Shepard to become Navy Pier’s number one attraction.

Shepard had no sleep during this two-day circling adventure. He was, however, entertained by the Navy Pier’s restaurant meals, personal video games, movies and social media. Many fans, friends, videographers, photographers and even the Guinness World record adjudicator went along for a few spins with Shepard. Fans could also talk to Shepard via Twitter asking questions, offering to ride with him and offering encouragement.

Shepard told an NBC Chicago reporter that the reason for breaking the record at the location of the Navy Pier was “Chicago was home to the world’s first Ferris wheel and the title should be here.”

SNL’ Cast Crisis? Who’s Left

The remaining members of SNL include Taran Killam, Vaness Bayer, Bobby Moynihan, Jay Pharaoh, Nasim Pedrad, Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong, and Kate McKinnon. Jason Sudeikis and Fred Armisen are supposed to leave the show in the near future. Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg left the show last season to dive into their own personal endeavors.

SNL will not have any other choice but to replace the lost cast members with new players and bring in some new talent. While the other remaining members have been able to carry their own, the show will lose Seth Meyers unique writing and new writers will need to be added to continue the humor.

He landed in a sandy area, but not before he initially slammed in to a group of rocks. Gough walked away from the ordeal nearly unscathed, with only a few cuts and bruises. He was quoted as having said, “I was in total shock that I was alive.”

The Lichfield, Straffordshire local was able to film the entire terrifying drop with a helmet mounted camera.

The jump went wrong he says, as “the parachute twisted and when it inflated it was facing backwards” and, “due to the twists I couldn’t control it, I did the best I could with the situation and tried to avoid the cliff but I didn’t have the time or the space to avoid the impact.”

Shaken by the incident, Matthew cut short a tour of the world that he was peppering with extreme sports stunts.

His arrival in Britain began with a seven hour hospital visit during which doctors performed tests.

Gough was attempting the jump at Lake Garda, in northern Italy.

Skydiver survives 13,000 foot fall

A New Zealand skydiver has spoken about how fortunate he is to be alive, and the thoughts that raced through his head as he plummeted earthwards from 13,000 feet. The weather was good and everything seemed normal when Liam Dunne jumped from the plane over Moteuko, but events soon took a dramatic turn.

Mr. Dunne’s main parachute failed to open and a after a desperate struggle, he managed to release his reserve chute just 15 seconds before impact, reports the Telegraph.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Mr Dunne told the Daily Mail: ‘Those last 1,000 feet it was like “here we go, this is it”.

‘It wasn’t nice, but that said, it was a one in a million accident and a one in a million save.

‘Skydiving is an awesome sport, and I’ve done 4,000 jumps and never had a problem.’

What An Idiot Man Recalls When Parachute Failed

Mr. Dunne’s main parachute failed to open and a after a desperate struggle, he managed to release his reserve chute just 15 seconds before impact, reports the Telegraph.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Mr Dunne told the Daily Mail: ‘Those last 1,000 feet it was like “here we go, this is it”.

‘It wasn’t nice, but that said, it was a one in a million accident and a one in a million save.

‘Skydiving is an awesome sport, and I’ve done 4,000 jumps and never had a problem.’

He hit the ground at 35 mph, but waterlogged conditions cushioned his fall and saved his life. The Liverpool born businessman recalled the thoughts that rushed through his mind in those frantic moments.

“What an idiot” was his first instinct before thinking of his wife and children. He recalled later that he was “gutted” to be losing them and thought, “What a stupid way to orphan your kids”.

“I thought I was a goner. I was definitely very lucky. The ground was like a big sponge.

“I could wriggle my toes so I knew I hadn’t broken my spinal cord,”

Mr. Dunne’s injuries required a 10 week stay at Christchurch Hospital where a steel pin was inserted into his back. However, the experience has not put him off jumping again. The 36 year old, who owns a skydiving company, had made over 4,000 successful jumps.

“Definitely, it’s do-able. The spine will be strong enough but I may have to figure another way to land.”

The New Zealand Parachute Industry Association has launched an investigation into the incident.

According to dropzone.com, there were about 49 Skydiving related deaths last year worldwide.

In a subsequent incident, a similarly described man flashed himself to a young child. Residents became frustrated with the lack of response by local police and sprang into action when they confronted a man wearing a bandanna and matching the assailant’s description.

The man attempted to flee prompting the group to beat him with rocks. Police arrived and took the man into custody. He is 54-years-old. Despite having his face bloodied, he was not seriously injured.

The man was questioned and later released. He decided against filing assault charges saying that he understood the frustration of local residents. He also agreed to furnish police with a DNA sample so that he could be ruled out as the attacker. Residents say they have no choice but to take matters into their own hands because they police aren’t doing their job adequately.

Teen’s invention could charge cellphone in 20 seconds

“I developed a new supercapacitor, which is basically an energy storage device which can hold a lot of energy in a small amount of volume,” she told KPIX 5. The technology may also be able to speed up charging of automobile batteries, she said.

The invention is a battery based on a super-capacitor which can hold electrical charges over long periods of time and which can also be recharged in seconds, twenty to be exact. Using her device, cellphones may eventually enter an era where recharging will take seconds. Additionally, the super-capacitor can be recharged up to 10,000 times before it fails which is exactly 10x what standard cellphone batteries can handle.

The smaller size of the capacitor will certainly reduce the weight of cellphones and allow for more flexible form factors. Khare says that this device, based on nanotechnology, has the ability to be placed inside clothing or other fabrics giving it a flexibility traditional batteries do not have.

Khare said her current cellphone battery “always dies” which is a something many other people experience regularly.

According to Khare, the technology can be part of “rollup displays” and other fabrics as well. For the competition, she was able to power a light emitting diode (LED) using the battery and recharge her source within 15 to 20 seconds.
