Nintendo Blames Dust, Tobacco On Wii Smash Bros. Problems

Brawl, enjoying sales of over 500,000 units on launch day. Problems though have come up as many Wii consoles are unable to read the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game. Nintendo has cited smoking and dust build-up on the Wii as the cause of these problems.

Nintendo put out a statement addressing the problem with Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii.

The problem came up when many Wii owners received an “Unable to read disc” message when trying to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl on their Nintendo console. This caused a great many gamers to go into an uproar as many were unsure if it was a problem with defective discs, or something more.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the first dual-layer DVD game, which the Wii laser is apparently having trouble reading.

According to IGN, Nintendo cited “dust and tobacco building up on Wii laser units” as the main cause of the problems that Wii units are having when trying to read the Super Smash Bros. Brawl discs.

Nintendo has already offered to clean the lens of the Wii laser for all Japanese gamers who have the problem.

All they have to do is send their Wii into a service center in Kyoto, and in one week it will be cleaned.

It is likely that this will not be the end of problems with the Wii laser as many games which feature a great deal of content will likely be on dual-layer DVDs from now on.
