Best Buy Chooses Blu-ray Over HD DVD

February 12, 2008

Just one day after Netflix announced that they would exclusively support the Blu-ray format, Best Buy has also stated that they will support the high-def Blu-ray format over the rival HD DVD formatBoston (dbTechno) - Just one day after Netflix announced that they would exclusively support the Blu-ray format, Best Buy has also stated that they will support the high-def Blu-ray format over the rival HD DVD format. This impacts not only movie sales, but could impact video game sales as well as the Xbox 360 supports an add-on HD DVD drive, while the Sony PS3 has a Blu-ray player built in.

Best Buy has stated that they will be recommending Blu-ray as the preferred format to customers from this point forward.

Brian Dunn, Best Buy’s president and chief operating officer stated “Our decision to shine a spotlight on Blu-ray Disc players and other Blu-ray products is a strong signal to our customers that we believe Blu-ray is the right format choice for them.”

He stated “Consumers have told us that they want us to help lead the way. We’ve listened to our customers, and we are responding. Best Buy will recommend Blu-ray as the preferred format.”

He stated that “Best Buy has always believed that the customer will benefit from a widely-accepted single format that would offer advantages such as product compatability and expanded content choices. Because we believe that Blu-ray is fast emerging as the single format, we have decided to focus on Blu-ray products.”

With all of these moves happening recently, it is definitely looking more and more like HD DVD is being backed into a corner and is going to have to really battle its way out if it wants to stay in the high-def format war with the juggernaut that is Blu-ray. The Blu keeps getting stronger.
