Sony Hints At Downloadable PS2 Games On PS3

February 13, 2008

Sony has hinted that even though the new models of the PS3 do not do backwards compatability, PS3 owners may soon be able to download full original PS2 games over the PlayStation Network, fully playable on the PS3New York (dbTechno) - Sony has hinted that even though the new models of the PS3 do not do backwards compatability, PS3 owners may soon be able to download full original PS2 games over the PlayStation Network, fully playable on the PS3.

The PS3 launch models are starting to go away, and with that, PS2 backwards compatability is going out the window, or so we thought.

Sony may have plans in the pipeline though to bring back PS2 games on the PS3, as download from the PlayStation Store.

The director of the Sony PlayStation Network, Eric Lempel, told EGM in an interview that “We haven’t talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possible.”

If they did go this route, Sony would likely charge per game just as they do with the original PlayStation games and PSP games.

This model though could open things up for Sony quite a bit.

Sony could offer high-definition versions of PS2 downloadable games on the PS3, fixing all worries about backwards compatability being gone.

We will have to wait and see, but it is certainly something Sony has interest in for the PlayStation Network.

Heck, I’d download Ico on my PS3.

Sounds like what they are doing, is recompiling PS2 games for PS3, and then offering them for download. Not quite the same as implementing emulation on 40GB machines.

So i have to pay for a game I already own, so i can play it on my PS3? Lucky i got a version with backwards compatibility…

It makes sense from a business standpoint. They now will have an additional source of revenue to have full time employees devoted to making the ports. It will hurt for the people that have a large PS2 collection and want to put their PS2 to rest.

I have enjoyed the downloaded games on my Wii but the library has so much to pull from that they are games that I pick more for a trip down memory lane. I think that a pull from the gamecube library would help boost that marketplace but then we run into the issue of a limited storage medium.

Live seems to concentrate on new content and maybe this will be the straw to push a large library of vintage xbox games to be available for download.

Now, I grabbed one of the backward compatible PS3s when the system launched and am glad for it. I will get to hold off on the download content for some time. I am worried that my backward compatible PS3 is going to die one day and I lose the capability to play my old PS2 games. Though when the time comes I guess I will get the chance to pick from a robust library.

WTF! I DONlT WANNA HAVE TO RE-BUY ALL MY GAMES! YOU KIDDING ME? is it really that hard to just have them all backwards compatible?

It is to bad Microsoft has alreday done this or maybe it would be a bigger step for them. PS3 really has no games so the people who buy them obviously are not looking for a game system.

This will be great! Next step is to get the UMD drive taken out of the next version of PSP. Games would be direct downloads via the PSN or PSN computer account. Cutting developer cost with total digital downloads for the PSP2. No more brick and mortar store PSP game sales. Good idea or bad idea?

Yeah this is pretty dirty when they could have just left BC in the consoles.

I too am lucky to have a US 60Gb with Emotion Engine (I’m from the UK and the then 20/60Gb non-BC models were out of the question tbh) so my PS2 catalogue lives on. I’d be somewhat pissed if I’d settled for a stripped SKU and being told PS2 on PS3 is a no-no, only to then learn of this new possibility…

first off, amazing, and the 360 fanboy i hate you, 360 does not let you download full games from the xbox console

Honestly, this is both a good idea, and completely retarded.
if you kept your PS2, or have a PS3 with backwards compatibility, this is completely useless. Otherwise, it’s a good idea

To me though, seems like they’re kinda ripping off the Virtual Console on the Wii (which is a million times better)
