Square Enix Sues Final Fantasy Replica Sword Makers
February 13, 2008
Washington (dbTechno) - Square Enix, the company behind Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and other huge game franchises, has filed a lawsuit against makers of Final Fantasy replica swords, on the ground of an infringement on its intellectual property.
They have filed a federal lawsuit in the Central District of California against many defendants.
The lawsuit zooms in on four wholesale retailers who sold Final Fantasy replica swords.
Square Enix stated that the swords were not licensed in any way.
Square Enix stated that the replica swords came from four Final Fantasy agmes, as well as the CG-animated film.
Yasuhiko Hasegawa of Square Enix commented, “We are actively pursuing those who commit intellectual property infringement against our company. Any illegal activities, including the sale and distribution of unauthorized replica merchandise and counterfeit jewelry, and the unauthorized copying of Square Enix games, music, movies, images, and other intellectual property, will be prosecuted. While Square Enix appreciates the enthusiasm of its fans, and values its relationship with them, it is also obligated to protect its intellectual property rights or risk weakening or losing the very rights that enable the company to continue to provide its fans with an exciting entertainment experience.”
Square Enix worked with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Customs, as well as Border Patrol in the seizing of a crate of unlicensed replica swords.
