February 14, 2008

An analyst has come out and stated that he believes that Nintendo and Microsoft will have new consoles out by the year 2010, with a new Xbox and possibly a new Wii console as well. 2010 will also be the end for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSPWashington (dbTechno) - An analyst has come out and stated that he believes that Nintendo and Microsoft will have new consoles out by the year 2010, with a new Xbox and possibly a new Wii console as well. 2010 will also be the end for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson stated to investors that he believes that Nintendo and Microsoft will have new consoles out by 2010.

He stated that “We believe that peak industry sales will occur in 2010.”

He stated by then Microsoft will introduce a new Xbox console that year, and Nintendo will also likely launch their new console that year, or even before that.

He stated that 2010 will also mark the end of the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP cycles, making way for a new Nintendo handheld as well as possibly a new Sony handheld.

This is absolute nonsense. There will most definitely not be a new Wii in 2010. It has been a sellout for 2 Christmas holidays straight, and Nintendo can’t even keep up with demand for the Wii in early 2008, almost a year and a half after its launch. The Wii’s life cycle will more likely be like that of the Playstation 2, which is still going strong after 7 years! Incidentally, 7 years was the amount of time between the release of the NES and the Super NES.

Look for Wii 2 in November 2013.

What statistics is this anylisis based on, this is more of a theory then a hypothosis…Two years from now the world should catch on that the PC is the maker of all the video games and as such should stay on the PC…

I’d say the Wii & 360 are out classed in hardware performance by the PS3, they have to bring out new units to keep up with Sony and the march of computer performance increases.

Consols by their computer nature need to be replaced every few years to keep up with the technology advances.

My guess is the next gen won’t use discs either.

I wrote about this against a Wired article nearly a year ago.

Actually gamers, its called business and you are consumers. So lets be clear.

    1) N, S and M made a console and one made money, the others a loss.

    2) Money is required for development

    3) To own the market is to drive the market (ipod ?!?)

    4) Life cycle is not about your games, its about owning the market

    5) M and S will just start making money to pay for new development as N rolls out new console, flooding market, meaning… well work it out.

So, Nintendo, who make money and therefore have the money to develop new equipment, will. By ending the pretend ‘lifecycle’ of consoles, they will control the market. It also controls the media, which tells you what you want but only wants to tell you what’s new.

Of course, they already know three handy things.

    1) How to make money from day 1 while being cheaper
    2) How to make 100% backward compatible consoles
    3) (Finally) How to make it an easy transition for developers to code

Welcome to where consoles are like ipods. A new one every year, better and better but it plays everything you already own.

The old model, 7 year cycles is because each console generation required complete relearning by coders etc. Stupid. Like 25 year backward thinking. Alas, like Sony is still thinking. PS1, 2 and 3.

M is more able to think this way. Sony, truth is, they are babes in the wood (in console and computer land).

The final step will be device independent graphics, whereby, using formulas and not pixels, the old game will play better on the new console and the new game will play visually simpler on the old console. Then it won’t matter if you still have Wii, all the new games will run on your console too.

I am a student at a high school in Indiana, I write for our large school newspaper. We write for over 4,000 viewers. I was thinking about writing a story about this article. If anyone could give me contact numbers for Microsoft or Nintendo so I can figure out what exactly is the deal with this. Also, Is that picture above an actual gaming console that the public has? I’m pretty sure it isn’t but you never know… If not can someone give me more information on that console above?

    Thanks!
