Microsoft To Buy “Gears of War” Dev Epic Games

February 18, 2008

According to reports, Microsoft is planning to buy the developer of the hit Xbox 360 game Gears of War, Epic Games, for the price of $1 billionWashington (dbTechno) - According to reports, Microsoft is planning to buy the developer of the hit Xbox 360 game Gears of War, Epic Games, for the price of $1 billion.  This all comes as an announcement is expected for Gears of War 2.

The report comes from the latest issue of GamePro magazine which stated that by this summer, Microsoft plans to finish a deal to buy Epic Games.

It is expected that Epic Games will reveal the sequel to Gears of War at the Game Developers’ Conference 2008 this week (GDC 2008).

They have their booth set up right next to Microsoft at the show.

If Microsoft does acquire Epic Games, it would also mean that they would own the rights to the Unreal game engine, which is used on every single platform, including the rival PS3, for developers to use to make next-gen games.

This would basically allow Microsoft to make money off of the Unreal engine rights used to sell games on the PC and PS3.

Who are Microsoft going to make money from once they buy everything on the planet? A little competition is a good thing but when it gets serious buy the competition and shut it down or rape its ass. M$ need some original development and have to start innovating rather than just buying everyone elses ideas and hard work.

wow, this is the worst. say goodbye to a fantastic company. everytime ms buys something out, it turns to crap. i.e. bungie.. ugh. goodbye unreal, goodbye ps3 support.

anubis66, you are too funny. Nice example lol, you are so naive. You say Bungie turned to crap, sales and popularity say otherwise. It sounds like you are pouting. I am willing to bet that you own a PS3 and not a 360..

MS is not going to stop licensing the engine. Why in the world would they do something like that? They unreal engine 3 isn’t the only good game engine on the ps3. MS would be making money off of both systems, and it is not like they need to worry about the PS3 getting too big haha.

http://winbreak.com - debunked this post already.

I think the article shot itself in the foot with the “one billion dollars” price tag. They won’t even give fifty million to Yahoo, I think a BILLION is a bit steep. And considering how UNREAL ENGINE 3 is the most popular engine on the market, I think they could resist a billion dollars if they really wanted to.

    i back what anubis66 say:

“wow, this is the worst. say goodbye to a fantastic company. everytime ms buys something out, it turns to crap. i.e. bungie”

MyOwnGod you are so naive, i will give you 2 more examples: rare, ensemble studios.
thats without mention the dozens of good software companies microsoft buy and erased from the map.
you think “sales and popularity say otherwise” well, windows vista was the SO that sold the most in 2007 and still is just crap, like windows me and almost every microsoft product.

If Microsoft buys Epic, then the Unreal Tournament series, Unreal Engine, Gears of War, ands all of the other products Epic developes are going to be owned by Microsoft.

Microsoft will still license the Unreal Engine out to developers, and it’s the developers’ decision to put games on the PS3. Microsoft will be making a shitload of money with the Unreal Engine, regardless of whether it was used on a PS3 game or an Xbox game.

Chances are Microsoft will put a restriction on developers who use the Unreal Engine for PS3 games. They don’t want Sony to reap the fruits of their labor (hypothetically speaking).

some of these points are valid and true, but you could have the best engine in the world for developing but it doesnt matter if you cant put your games on a good quality disc. Since HD DVD has said they are stopping production of it microsoft wont have anything to put any of their games on apart from old shitty discs, so then they would have to go back and reduce its size but that means it will look crappy as hell. and microsoft wont be able to use blu ray as its sonys own product and is only usedfor ps3 and blu ray players, which when i looked last the 360 didnt have and it costs atleast 250 pounds for one so about 500 dollars. that will also cause developers to develop for the ps3 as it would be better to develop on for them, so there would be fewer 360 games and way more ps3 exclusives.

2008 will be xbox 360´s hangover year where they will do crap. as ps3 has 4 big 2008 exclusives of. MGS4 which IS NOT GOING TO THE 360! killzone 2, final fantasy, resistance 2. whereas the 360 only has gears of war 2, and bungie the halo developer has also left microsoft so thats halo wars out the window and ps3 could get halo!
