Microsoft Dropping Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive To Under $50

Boston (dbTechno) - The rush is on for retailers ot try and get rid of whatever stock they have left of HD DVD movies and HD DVD players. It looks like retailers are going to really make a push to get rid of the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive as it is expected that Microsoft will cut the price of the drive down to $49.99.
It was only a few weeks ago when it was noted that the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive would receive a price cut down to $129.99.
Now, with HD DVD history and Blu-ray reigning supreme over the high-def format war, Microsoft is apparently looking to get rid of whatever HD DVD players they have left in stock for the Xbox 360.
Microsoft is expected to announce a price drop of the HD DVD drive today which will lower the price point down to $49.99, cheaper than a new Xbox 360 game!
This comes as many other retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, and others push to get rid of whatever HD DVD stock they have left. Many of them have sales going which cut the price of all HD DVD movies by 50%.
Toshiba has also announced a price drop for their line of HD DVD players before they become extinct.

So where’s the blu-ray drive announcement from MS? I wonder if Sony can somehow stick it to MS on the blu-ray licensing.
Probably not on the hardware license, since will be outsourcing the drives. But, on the software side where MS may have to deal directly with Sony on a blu-ray license, it could get interesting? Does anyone know?

Why does everyone automatically assume that the Xbox “needs” a blu-ray drive? There are not any games requiring that kind of storage. Which might be a clue why they didn’t put the HD DVD drive inside.
