LucasArts To Develop On PS3 Before Xbox 360

February 24, 2008

LucasArts has announced that they have chosen the Sony PS3 over the Microsoft Xbox 360 to lead development for future next-gen games after the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Big games in the past have all been developed on the Xbox 360 first the moved over to the PS3, such as Grand Theft Auto IV. Things are beginning to change thoughSan Francisco (dbTechno) - LucasArts has announced that they have chosen the Sony PS3 over the Microsoft Xbox 360 to lead development of future next-gen games after the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Big games in the past have all been developed on the Xbox 360 first the moved over to the PS3, such as Grand Theft Auto IV. Things are beginning to change though.

It was announced at the Game Developers Conference 2008 that LucasArts is using the Sony PS3 as the lead console for development of their next-gen games.

They stated that their future strategy is going to use the PS3 as the lead platform.

Haden Blackman, project lead for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, stated Our next project will use the PS3 as the baseline, and then apply that to the Xbox 360.”

According to LucasArts, they began development on Star Was: The Force Unleashed on the Xbox 360 dev kits in 2005. Upon receiving the PS3 dev kits though, they found that it was hard to move the game from the Xbox 360 to the PS3, which sparked this decision.

Over the past year PS3 gamers have been seeing many games come out and be behind the Xbox 360 version. It was most notably seen in the EA Sports release last August, Madden NFL 2008, which ran considerably slower on the PS3 compared to the Xbox 360.

With the PS3 being the technically more powerful console, many gamers did not understand why, yet many developers continue to do this and develop on the Xbox 360 first.

Things may be changing, for future Star Wars games at least from LucasArts, as the PS3 will be the lead over the Xbox 360.

Well you have to develop on the weaker platform first, the 360 can run everything the ps3 can, but this is not true the other way around, this is a shame because 360 games will not be as good as they could be now that they are bottlenecked by the ps3 versions

  5. Reality Check on February 24th, 2008 7:15 pm

Of couse this won’t become a trend with other developers due to simple logic my friends. The 360 sells more then twice as many games because the real gamers are 360 owners…the facts are i the number of games sold per console. It is quicker and easier to develop for the 360, hence comes more profit at lower development costs. It is easier to port to a PC from the 360 then the PS3 and the PC sales outsell the PS3 too (You may as well count each PC sale as a sale for the 360 due to that fact). I could go on and on, but is there really a point? The 3d party developers are making games first on the system that makes the most money for them…all other development is chump change in their pockets. Clearly, if this story is even true, Lucas Arts will wind up admitting to being paid to do the PS3 first. It will as always still run smoother and look better on the 360 regardless which system is made on first. You could take an extra year develping it on the PS3 and it still won’t look as good. And thats the fact folks…don’t even both responding because your wrong before it even comes out of your mouth if you do. Save your breath!!!

wow im guessing reality check is a fanbow of the 360

Fan boy or not, Reality check is right. It makes no sense to start with the PS3. There is no incentive to do it that way other than to save Sony the embarrassment of having their titles come out 2 - 6 months after the 360’s. Why would they try to save Sony from being embarrassed? I would assume another under-the-table deal by Sony (like with Warner Bros.). Sony is a big company but their pocketbooks aren’t as deep as the Sony fanboys want to believe…MS should have thrown some money around to end the format war…hopefully they won’t make the same mistake twice and believe me when I say that their pockets are much deeper than Sony’s.

This article is being biased. PS3 could need more development time, but developing games on X360 is obviously better. Do not forget, MS is light years ahead of Sony in Software line, and the SDK and the kits from MS are simply better. Developers always find it easier to do much more in X360, because many of the parts of game developments is already developed by Microsoft in the SDKs. I work in a software company, and I have a few friends in many other who all can give you facts why X360 has been able to beat PS3. Hardware wise, the ONLY advantage PS3 has is the Blu-ray storage, there is nothing more than that. But Microsoft also uses some awesome compression techniques - to be really making games with all the content of Blu-ray the game itself would require more time and money. If you own a game development company, and want to maximum profit by making quality games, its jsut simple, X360 is the way to go.

It’s been years since E3-2005, people stilll dont get it, whatever Sony promised the PS3 to be, many of them never actually came true. It’s very sad taht PS3 is still overhyped has so much more powerful than X360, but its really not. And someone should give Microsoft credits for what it did to the industry leading PlayStation brand. If someone wants to hate Microsoft thats their own issue. The only thign that X360 did bad was the damned RROD - thats the only reason why someone could go for a PS3, but then again you would miss so much thats going on.

Wow, “Reality Check” you must be the smartest person in the whole World, you know everything, I’m surprised Microsoft, Sony & Nintendo haven’t all hired you to run their business for them, I’m just in awe of your knowledge, you are a legend in your own mind. Truth is you are just another pitiful 360 fanboy who cannot bear the thought of games not being made first on his precious 360 but you better get used to it, change is in the air.

Actually the PC is the lead developing platform. Since all the development tools are PC based. Since the animation etc.. are all developed on the PC and then downgraded and optimised to work on the PS3 and XBox 360 platforms.

Having said that, the PS3 software is far more difficult to develope for and to optimize for so extra effort is probably required for that platform. They obviously think porting from PS3 to the Xbox 360 is much easier. So I am I guessing this is a busy decision, i.e. doing it this way requires less development time and cost.

I don’t think this is a plus point for either platform, from the gamers point of view.

I think i should remind you all what MS is, (please do not take any of he following comments to heart, this is one man speaking his knowledge)They are the biggest scam on the planet. I am not really bothered to go thru all the details right now, but i am going to leave some facts, The ps3 is a much more powerfull system in many ways although I understand that all the new hardware causes mass confusion for developers, I think its time they got the book out and read it. MS’s console is a good machine no doubt but on there software term, sony is a much more open system. I dont like it when people refer to its price tag either because you will end up paying allot more for your xbox over all. I am sorry if im going a little off topic hear but i think this needs to be sed, If i had say a sister and a brother and I had an xbox 360, We all want our own save spot and we all want online….. You have to pay all three people online each year….and i know its not allot but it does all add up… that and the wireless adapter (£50), and the fact that MS went through the bother of making there own wireless frequency, there own special hard drive, even there own special power adapter…… look at all of this and compare. but in saying all this i think the xbox is a well put together machine but i see allot more potential in the ps3 and I dont have either of them but have had experience with both. So dont call me a fanboy or whatever. I just want someone to tell me whats better about the xbox.

Saquib Hussain you sed hardware wise explain? I apologize for going off topic but I read somwhere there that the xbox is better hardware wise and im just lookn for info.

this has nothing to do with PS3 currently being a superior gaming platform. it is simply due to the fact that it’s a more technologically complex machine to develop for, so it’s easier to start with it as the baseline and then develop for the XBOX 360 version which is more developer friendly.
