Sony Poised To Make 2008, The Year of the PS3
February 29, 2008
Boston (dbTechno) - According to an iSuppli analyst, Sony is poised to make 2008 the year of the PS3. It may be the Nintendo Wii that is currently on top of the gaming world, but things could be changing as many expect the PlayStation 3 to make quite a run this year.
Pamela Tufegdzic, analyst for iSuppli stated “2008 will be a turning year for the PS3. Sony is offering a better forthcoming software pipeline with blockbusuter titles like Gran Turismo 5, which will boost PS3 sales this year.”
Gran Turismo 5 is not all Sony has for 2008 though. They also have the likes of Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, and many other games yet to even be announced. Don’t forget about the Blu-ray player, as well as PlayStation Home launching as well to expand the PlayStation Network.
Sony is expecting manufacturing costs of the PS3 to drop, paving the way for them to cut the price point of the PS3.
They have also announced new bundles to help push the console as well, including a Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle in North America, as well as a Gran Turismo 5 Prologue bundle in Europe.
The other big factor is the emergence of Blu-ray. With the HD-DVD format now out of the way, more consumers may be ready to jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon, and with that, they will likely purchase a PS3 as their Blu-ray player, before spending more money on a standalone player.
Price is huge, and with the price of the PS3 continuing to drop, it is clear to see why this iSuppli analyst believes that 2008 will be the year of the PS3.
Tufegdzic even stated that once Sony does one more price cut, all those consumers who purchased a Wii already, will be buying a PS3 this Christmas.

I really don’t think price is that big of a deal anymore….people bought up the 80g like it was going out of….oh wait, hehe, it did lol. Of course, they replaced the 80g SKU with another….80g SKU, but no matter. I really think right now the biggest problem is the competition can say, look at all these games we have. And Sony, while they have some really great titles out, they’re mostly NEW titles…IE…none of the franchise games that made the PS1 and PS2 as hot as they were.
Given that we should see these games in 2008, one must admit the chance that there are 50-100 million PS2 owners out there, sitting on the fence, waiting for these games to come out. And, if that’s all they’re waiting for….2008 may be remembered as the year that Sony took the ‘out-of-stock’ reigns from Nintendo.

PS3 will do alright this year, but Wii has the steam, and Xbox 360 has a much better software lineup than Sony.
HD-DVD may be out, but it was the stronger brand, and I think some people will still be reticent to get behind Blu-Ray. What Sony should have done is worked closely with Toshiba in the first place. Then they would not be lightyears behind on every front.
I bought my 60GB on NOV. 16th, 2006.
Best console ever!!!
Thanks Sony! Worth every single penny!
The PlayStation is video game industry standard main gaming system. When you say games you say PlayStation the best selling console in the history of video games. PS3 will be leader soon just like always. 2008 is gonna be another great year for Sony since this is the year Xbox 360 falls out like Sega Dreamcast.
PS3 catching up to Wii is impossible, the system can’t even sell 200K most weeks, Wii does more than that even when its in low supply
Umm, Metal Gear will spark some sales but personally I think MS has a MUCH better software line-up for 2008 and beyond. I do own a 60GB PS3, you know the one with a big HDD, all the USB ports, all the features, and full backwards compatibility. Sony is just confusing to follow anymore: What system model is better again, the stripped down cheap 80GB? Are PS3 games going to finally copy MS’s achievements? Controller vibration feedback? a white system? a price drop? Home? For the money and so few games, even with Metal Gear, Resistance 2, and Final Fantasy the PS3 just really isn’t worth it. And yes, I do own Unreal III, Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Ratchet, and Drake. Good games but nothing compared to the exclusives on 360, I even buy the multiports on the 360 not only for the achievements but they also perform better.
I don’t see 2008 doing much, I think all system sales are going to flatten out. Sure Metal Gear and FF will help spur some PS3 sales, but games such as Gears of War 2 for the 360 is going to push a lot more systems next holiday because marketing and timing is just as crucial as having a good game. MS just knows how to plan better than Sony.
Based on my knowledge we all know that MGS4 is exclusive only to the playstation 3, also of course Metal Gear Solid 4 is practically the best game ever made Im getting tired of people saying MGS4 is coming out for 360 even when Producer/Director of MGS4 said it is only going to be for the playstation 3
